Statement: DOA Act Would Have Devastating Impacts on Medicaid Recipients

House Republicans’ Default on America Act Would Have Devastating Impacts on Medicaid Recipients

WASHINGTON D.C. – In response to President Joe Biden’s speech this afternoon in Valhalla, New York regarding the debt limit, Nicole Jorwic, chief of advocacy and campaigns at Caring Across Generations, released the following statement:

“House Republicans’ Default on America Act puts 21 million people at risk of losing Medicaid. President Biden said this would be devastating, and I cannot agree more that this would exacerbate care barriers families all across the country face every day.

“Let’s call it like it is: this Default On America Act is a terrible deal for everyday people and will cause direct harm to Americans. When the government plays games with things like food, health coverage, and aging and disability care, nobody wins and families continue to suffer.

“President Biden continues to prove he is doing everything within his executive power to improve the care economy in this country because he has heard our calls and seen the growing power of the care movement across the country.

“Now it’s time for Congress do their job. Congress must do more to make sure the wealthy and big corporations pay their fair share of taxes, not take care away from millions of people.”

Caring Across Generations is a national organization of family caregivers, care workers, disabled people, and aging adults working to transform the way we care in this country so that care is accessible, affordable and equitable— and our systems of care enable everyone to live and age with dignity.

To achieve our vision, we transform cultural norms and narratives about aging, disability and care; win federal and state-level policies; and build power amongst the people touched by care. For more information, visit caringacross.org.
