WASHINGTON D.C.—Today, the Supreme Court issued a unanimous decision in Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), ruling that the plaintiffs do not have standing to challenge the FDA’s approval of mifepristone, one of the drugs in the most common medication abortion regimen. In response, Nicole Jorwic, Chief of Campaigns and Advocacy of Caring Across Generations, released the following statement:
“We are pleased that today’s ruling allows access to mifepristone, the most common regimen for medication abortion, to remain in place. It is a welcome relief, but the fact that we continue to come close to losing access to an essential part of reproductive health care in our country is a signal of a larger, persistent threat to our rights. While this is a win, access to abortion and other reproductive health care remains under constant threat, whether from the Supreme Court, Congress or state legislatures. This was made apparent when just a few hours after the Supreme Court upheld access to mifepristone, some senators voted down the Right to IVF Act, which would have established a federal right to in vitro fertilization-assisted reproductive technologies.
“Abortion care is family care. Reproductive health care is family care. Our freedom to choose what’s best for our families and our futures – that’s what’s at stake.
“Having the freedom to decide if and when we grow our family, how that family is defined, and how to care for them is fundamental to living the lives we choose. We will not stop pushing for a nation where everyone has the rights, access, and means to decide for themselves about what their families look like.”
