WASHINGTON D.C. (May 22, 2025) – In response to the House passing massive cuts of nearly $800 billion to Medicaid and $500 billion to Medicare that will result in at least 14 million people losing coverage, Nicole Jorwic, Chief Program Officer at Caring Across Generations, released the following statement:
“No matter what some Congressional leaders repeatedly deny, this budget contains some of the largest cuts to Medicaid in history, threatening the health and well-being of every single one of our communities. These dangerous proposals will rip health care coverage away from millions; close rural hospitals; punish people with draconian work requirements; and penalize states for caring for their residents. None of this is hypothetical – if signed into law, these cuts will hit every family, and will hit fast. There is absolutely no justification for enacting any of these cuts and taking away health coverage and long-term care from millions of older adults, disabled people, caregivers, care workers, and families.
“We are all doing the best we can to care for ourselves and for the people we love. And the truth is, we deserve better than this. In a country where 10,000 of us are born and 10,000 of us turn 65 every day, we should not be fighting to save Medicaid and Medicare, we should be talking about how to expand these programs so those who need care and their caregivers are supported.
“Programs like Medicaid and Medicare are a promise we make to each other as a country that we will take care of each other from one generation to the next. Medicaid is not a piggy bank and we must continue to protect our public dollars for care and investments that actually lower costs for families while ensuring that people can access the care they need without risking everything.”

Caring Across Generations is a national organization of family caregivers, care workers, disabled people, and aging adults working to transform the way we care in this country so that care is accessible, affordable and equitable— and our systems of care enable everyone to live, work, and age with dignity.
To achieve our vision, we transform cultural norms and narratives about aging, disability and care; win federal and state-level policies; and build power amongst the people touched by care. For more information, visit caringacross.org.
