Caring Across Generations Responds to Debt Ceiling Deal

Bipartisan Budget Agreement Protects Medicaid

WASHINGTON D.C. (May 30, 2023)— In response to President Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy reaching a deal on the debt ceiling, Nicole Jorwic, chief of advocacy and campaigns at Caring Across Generations, released the following statement:

“Because of President Biden and thousands of care advocates’ unrelenting stand against attacks on Medicaid by MAGA extremists, 21 million people will keep their Medicaid coverage. While this is a huge win, we should have never been in this position to begin with. No one should have the power to threaten families and hold the economy hostage for political gain.

“The Default on America Act flat-out prioritized the ultra-wealthy and big corporations over the needs of older adults, children, and disabled people. This cruel trend of inflicting harm on our families and communities just to play a political game is barbaric and must stop.

“We are disheartened to see care and support programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program (TANF), which help this country’s families thrive, put on the chopping block again and again. We must come together and demand our elected officials eject from this bleak cycle that places brinkmanship over people’s lives. It’s time we invest in the care and resources our families need by making the ultra-wealthy and big corporations pay their fair share.”

About Caring Across Generations

Caring Across Generations is a national organization of family caregivers, care workers, disabled people, and aging adults working to transform the way we care in this country so that care is accessible, affordable and equitable— and our systems of care enable everyone to live and age with dignity.

To achieve our vision, we transform cultural norms and narratives about aging, disability and care; win federal and state-level policies; and build power amongst the people touched by care. For more information, visit CARINGACROSS.ORG.
