WASHINGTON D.C. (April 5, 2025) – In response to the passing of the Senate budget resolution, Nicole Jorwic, Chief Program Officer at Caring Across Generations, released the following statement:
“Despite pleas from millions across the country, Congress has moved forward with a budget resolution that will cause direct harm to families in every community. This budget framework includes nearly a trillion dollar cut to vital programs, such as Medicaid, which will cruelly rip care away from those who need it most, cost families their emotional and financial wellbeing, and threaten lives.
“This prioritization of the ultra-wealthy and big corporations over the needs of older adults, children, disabled people, and caregivers is incomprehensible and must stop. Our elected officials need to eject from this bleak cycle of inflicting harm on our families and communities just to play a political game.
“Several members voted ‘yes’ on a bill to move forward policies like Medicaid cuts that they say they disagree with. Make it make sense. One bipartisan amendment offered by Senator Dan Sullivan vaguely stated that Medicaid and Medicare should be preserved, without specifying that funding cuts be removed. While this amendment did pass, a second amendment from Senator Ron Wyden and Senator Josh Hawley that would have stricken the language instructing $880 billion cuts to Medicaid, failed to pass, even though all Democrats and three Republican Senators voted to support it. This shows that advocates fighting to protect Medicaid are breaking through.
“Medicaid supports young parents just starting families, funds wages for the direct care workers who provide care at home to older adults and disabled people, and offers health care to some of our most undervalued essential workers. It’s a workforce program, a healthcare program, and a long-term care program, all in one. If you don’t use Medicaid, I promise you know and love someone who does.
“Our country’s families deserve better options and opportunities to care for themselves and their loved ones without worrying about losing their health care. Our nation’s leaders must put families first and end these harmful attacks on life-saving programs.”
