With this ruling, home care workers around the country may have to wait even longer for basic labor protections that could lift them out of poverty. States should not wait until this dispute is resolved.

Caring Across Generations applauds President Obama for taking a tremendous step forward for securing the eldercare workforce we need for a stronger economy and more secure future. This action is especially critical for the wellbeing of older Americans and people with disabilities – and for the millions of aging Baby Boomers who will need care in the coming years.

Hundreds of home care workers from California to New York and from all sectors of the industry gathered in St. Louis the past two days for a historic summit on the future of care. The Home Care Workers Rising Summit was convened by Caring Across in partnership with national labor unions, consumer and disability rights advocates, to focus on the growing national movement for quality care.

Today’s Supreme Court decision in the Harris v. Quinn case has made it more difficult for parents and grandparents in Illinois to secure the quality care they need to live independently in their homes. Quality care begins by ensuring quality jobs, and one cannot be separated from the other.
